Meetings and events
The year begins with a beginners' course of six lessons, held on consecutive weeks starting on Monday 16th January (with the exception of Monday 13th February which clashes with the Fly Fishers meeting and so we skip a week).
Following this, on alternative months there will be further fly tying lessons and demonstrations by club instructors. On the other alternate months there will be guest speakers and fly-tyers, who show members how to use the latest techniques and to tie new fly patterns.
The first lesson will cover the basics, inluding an introduction to the pricipal tools used by the fly-tyer and the three essential skills that any budding student will need to master. Experienced club members will assist beginners, on a one-to-one basis, to accomplish these skills. The following weekly lessons will be dedicated to demonstration tying of two flies - one suitable for stillwater and one for moving water, which can then be tied by students under guidance (materials and tools will be provided).
One evening will dedicated to basic casting techniques and there will also be tutorial sessions on how to set up fishing rigs with the choice of flies to suit the season and how to tie them. The club holds two friendly competitions each year, which are aimed at encouraging beginners to widen their experience by visiting different venues which present a new set of challenges.
